ABOUT IDEAL

The Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL) programme is a multi-disease, multidisciplinary research and capacity-building initiative hosted by KEMRI-Wellcome. IDeAL is one of the SFA Foundation’s 14 initiatives under the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training, and Science in Africa (DELTAS Africa) Phase 2. IDeAL's partners include the Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Zambia (CIDRZ), Epicentre in Niger, the University of Glasgow and Oxford in the UK, as well as Strathmore and Pwani universities in Kenya.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a motivated and creative Graduate Trainee Fellow with a background in science communication and a keen interest in digital storytelling. This six-month contract provides an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to gain practical experience in science communication within a dynamic, world-class research environment. The role will assist the Training Department and contribute to the broader communications efforts of the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL).

The Graduate Trainee will play a key role in developing and delivering engaging communication materials that highlight IDeAL’s capacity-building efforts. From supporting digital media projects and designing outreach materials to participating in public and community engagement activities, the successful candidate will work closely with the communications team and IDeAL Fellows to bring scientific work and stories to life. We are seeking someone who brings fresh ideas, creative energy, and a willingness to learn. The ideal candidate is adaptable, proactive, and eager to contribute to shaping how African research is shared globally.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the end-to-end production of science communication content, with a strong focus on video formats, including concept development, scripting, filming, and post-production, while ensuring alignment with IDeAL’s goals.
  • Champion and implement creative internal communication strategies, using video and multimedia formats to drive Fellows’ engagement and enhance IDeAL’s branding
  • Develop and supervise social media strategies and digital campaigns, leveraging data insights to craft compelling short-form videos, animations, interviews, and other visual assets that increase reach and impact.
  • Support content development for various digital platforms, including newsletters, press releases, the IDeAL website, and video channels, ensuring consistent messaging and editorial excellence.
  • Support the development of written and multimedia narratives that highlight the IDeAL’s programs, research achievements, and community stories, tailored for diverse audiences including policymakers, funders, and the public.
  • Represent the communications function at key meetings, events, and conferences, while managing audiovisual documentation, maintaining content trackers, and providing high-level communications advice and oversight.
  • Provide communications mentorship to the Fellows, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and innovation in digital storytelling and science outreach.
  • Oversee and coordinate stakeholder engagement initiatives across the IDeAL consortium, ensuring effective communication of research outcomes and fostering strategic relationships through visual storytelling and media outreach.
  • Perform any other communications-related duties as required.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, science communication, science journalism, or a related field from a recognized institution is required. Previous experience in communications, media, or public relations, whether as a volunteer or otherwise, is an asset.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTRIBUTES

  • proven track record in producing high-impact video content and digital campaigns.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills; familiarity with social media platforms; ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrable interest in science, research, and innovation, particularly within the African context.
  • Proficiency in Premier Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English is required; knowledge of French or other African Union languages is an advantage.
